미묘한 차이

영어 접속사 because와 since는 둘 다 이유를 설명하지만 미묘한 차이가 있다. 전자는 후자보다 인과관계를 강하게 나타낸다. 그래서 직접적이며, 논리적인 이유를 말할 땐 because를 많이 쓰고, 간접적인 이유나 어떤 상황에 대한 배경을 말할 때는 since를 사용한다.

다음 예문들을 비교해 보자.

My cell phone broke because I dropped it. (o)
Since I dropped my cell phone, it broke. (x)

Since I don't have classes tomorrow, I'm going to sleep late. (o)
I'm going to sleep late tomorrow because I don't have classes. (어색한 표현. 말하는 사람이 '너 도대체 왜 늦잠자려고 하느냐'고 따질 것 같아서 미리 변명하는 느낌을 준다)

Since it's raining, let's take a cab. (o)
Let's take a cab because it's raining. (x)

Since you're here, you might as well stay for dinner. (o)
Because you're here, you might as well stay for dinner. (x)
