상상력

S. T. Coleridge는 상상력에 대해 이렇게 말한다.

The principle of the imagination resembles the emblem of the serpent, by which the ancients typified wisdom and the universe, with undulating folds, for ever varing and for ever flowing into itself -- circular, and without beginning or end.

상상력은 처음과 끝이 없이 끊임없이 변주되며 재생하는, 고대에는 지혜와 우주를 상징한 뱀을 그려놓은 표상에 비유된다.
우주로 뻗어가면서 그 속에 지혜가 담긴 재생의 힘, 그것이 상상력이라고 말한다.
